rocks, it could install Return To Castle Wolfenstein (which wasn't possible with earlier versions, had to have a win partition) and I tried running it too, which worked nice (though naturally not as good as the linux native version)

I'm downloading wineX 2.0 now (with directx 8 support) which should be pretty good too, I'll post about my findings.....

wine isn't free though, is it? Is there some comparable free product?
and what about wineX? what's the difference? i have heard in the past that sometimes wine does a better job than wineX. is wineX for a certain type of application?

you can get wine at http://www.winehq.org it's free (LGPL license), you can get winex at http://www.transgaming.com, it's also free, except for the propietry copy protection stuff for which you will need to subscribe, non subscribers can only get it through CVS

oh ... and the difference between wine and winex is that winex focusses on directx support (winex 2 has directx 8 support)

yeah ... but there is no SafeDisc support nor is there any InstallShield support (both of which are in the version for subscribers, which costs 5$/month, seems worth it though)

dont you need to install anything to be able to play it? That means that i might have to suscribe to be able to play games?

it's not illegal if you own the game to apply a crack....

only the installshield programs are a bit of a fuss (tough older versions of installshield work perfectly)

so will winex work just as well with non game programs that use directX?

for example, my favourite audio editing program (Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 5) only runs in windows (no mac version even available!). It typically says you need the latest version of DirectX to run it properly.

There are many DirectX plugins available, some written for Sound Forge, some for CoolEdit, and some just for any DirectX using audio program.

Anyway, i've drawn a blank so far finding any linux programs that really compare, so maybe this windows program will run in wineX?

Or is it usually just the gaming people they aim for?

since there is no support if you dl the CVS source, i will have to ask you, how to i install winex after i download the CVS using the commands from their dl page?

only one way to find out, try it ...

if it relies on dx7/8 then use winex, if it uses an older dx version use the normal wine (or use both, you can run make uninstall to remove wine and run $WINEDIR/tools/wineinstall to install it again, I have both versions on my pc and switch between them to try out different programs, dunno if it's possible to have 2 wine versions next to eachother, never tried it..... )

I haven't done anything with audio in a long time. I used to make digital music with impulse tracker (the infamous MOD format, only improved then) and also used cooledit (plus various software synthesizers, those programs ruled) and I allways used cooledit to fine tune my samples, was a really nice program....

I'll try running cooledit pro with wine and post here if it worked or not

didn't have much luck running cooledit under wine (nor under winex for that matter)....
