Like it or not for the "mainstream" custemer that dont want to worry about hardware or software conflicts can buy Londows pre installed on pcs.....

And man look how cheap those Pcs are...gotta get me one soon.

Walking into a store looks at this super fast pc and says wow thats cheap ill buy that !!!

this is very true. once other distros get over the OEM stranglehold that MS' EULAs put on them, LindowsOS (i hope) will be totally swamped by suse, RH and mdk, the current 3 biggest and most user friendly distros.

• Perhaps because it has a more centralized method of installing / finding program files? (If not more centralized, more familiar
• Much more similar familar GUI, not that it matters but we all know how opposed to change 'they' are
• More easily compatible with the formats they already know and use (Face it they don't want to work to get anything "It should just work") As I am sure many tech support calls can verify
• "Easy to use wizards..." as stated on Xandros's website (Not Lindows but would be a lot more familiar for someone coming from Windows than compiling and depdencies)

Sensing the familiarity trend here? I would agree, while I may or may not like Lindows, OSs or similarly configured ones are always gonna attract more people than the traditional *nices (RH, MDK, etc). Not that these aren't good and don't measure up on these compatibilities but people switching over are not gonna want to go through /etc/XFRee86/... to get their video drivers updated

red hat comes with a complete complement of wizards, and mandrake has its own dedicated operating system control panel just like windows, red hat will even install a version of wine on there for you if you ask it to, and this is all over and above the excellent kde3 and gnome2 control centres.

For one thing, you're not automatically logged as root, a great, big, security "hole".

1 - Security! As TheQuirk said, when installing Lindows you're always logging in as root. That is ONE BIG security hole in every *NIX-like OS!

2 - Configurability! Lindows doesn't let you do any kind of advanced configuration, unless you're a mazochist and like digging deep down and beyond those fancy GUI wizards that Lindows comes with.

3 - Control of your installation! Face it. With Lindows you don't have any option when installing it on your machine.

4 - Software! Lindows ships on one CD, I think. SuSE 8.2 on the other hand ships with 2 (!!!) DVDs of software to choose from as well as 7 CD-ROMS!

5 - Documentation! SuSE Linux comes with 2 500+ pages manuals. What does Lindows come with? Nothing!

If you're thinking of downloading a Linux distro, Lindows is not an option. SuSE isn't an option either, but RH, Mandrake and just about every Linux distro out there can be freely downloaded.

Thank you for your answers. I tried all three main distros, and many others, but have never tried Lindows before. I am already familiar with Linux, but I was wondering why so many dislike Lindows.

I have heard of the logging as root issue, and I agree that it is a security problem.
