Business switching to Linux
« on: 30 October 2002, 07:08 »
If a business wanted to put RedHat (for example) on one of their computers would they have to pay for the version or is the free version meant for anyone's use and not just personal. After browsing around on the Redhat i site and the slackware site (in case i wanted to put slackware on their comp for them    ) i didnt know where else to look, so i asked.

Also, a question to old Unix users, have you heard of Tomax (I have no clue how to spell it, but the pronounciation is correct) but it is at least 12 years old and i want to find information about it

Although you might think I'm biased....

For a business, I would recommend SuSe Pro, it comes with an incredible amount of applications, including Gnucash which seems to be the only real alternative to programs like quickbooks.

I know you can download Gnucash for any distro, but even the homepage recommends that you just get a distro that includes it already. They acknowledge that it is very hard to configure.
*meow!* I didn't say Linux was easier, I said it was better, Dumbass!

You can download RedHat 8.0 directly from RedHat's site without paying a cent and install that copy of RedHat on all 5,000 desktop systems. You might want to burn a few copies of the CD or set up an install server as it might take you some time to install it 5,000 times serially. Perfectly legal and within your rights.

Now if you want support from RedHat if you have a problem, you might want to purchase a few copies or work out some sort of support agreement with them that will cost you. But if you don't need direct support you can use if for free all you want. Remember, you're in a GNU world. No more proprietary money sucking grubs.

Since this is a web site you are wanting to set up are you sure they didn't want "Apache Tomcat"? Also, RedHat 8.0 comes with GNU Cash too, not that you need it.
