Changing from Windows XP to RH Linux 9 on my Acer TravelMate 430 series?

Hi All,

I'm new here and want to change from using windows xp to Redhat linux 9 in my notebook (Acer TravelMate 430 series)by making a fresh installation and having a single boot only.

On doing so what will happen to my emails in outlook and will be able to use them back if i save the .pst files?

The MS office is the one which I'm using currently and so if I change to some other office tools, will other users be able to use my documents?

The CD burning software and music, games can i happen to use something to replace them?

keep in mind that you will need to format your whole hard drive.  That means you will need to backup any of your important stuff.  I suggest not ever using outlook express even if you are using windows.  As for office documents, use openoffice.org.  It is just like microsoft office and it can open microsoft documents and save them too.  It works the same as ms office too, so you do not need to re-lean a program.

Mozilla Mail is able to import Outlook back-ups. So burn all your non-Windows files (documents, movies, music, Mail, bookmarks, etc.) on a CD, or copy them to another computer.

And about Red Hat Linux 9... it's old. Get Fedora instead. It's kinda Red Hat 10:

No that you have shown windows the exit door you will now experience what it's like to use operating systems without a virus!

I wish you best of luck with Redhat Linux - I personally use Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) - if you don't get on with Red Hat I would heartily recommend a Mac and OS X!!

As for music and games.  You will have to install the mp3 plug-in for XMMS (if you can't find it, let me know), that's my preferred method of playing downloads.  kscd will take care of any of your audio CD needs.  The default set of games for Linux is massive compared to Solitaire, Hearts, FreeCell, Pinball, and Spider Solitaire.  You will be quite pleased.

Yeah, it would be a good idea to use Fedora Core 1 if you can download it, or you can wait for Fedora Core 2 to be released soon.  It has the new 2.6 kernel and a lot more security features thanks to the SELinux project.

Mozilla mail is a software by itself is it? Please enlighten me like how I go by to get this particular email configured on my laptop if i were to run Fedora/RH Linux 9?

Mozilla not only rules, it kicks ass too.  And it's easy to use.  I didn't know it would eat outlook files, but thats cool to know.

Thunderbird actually runs as a standalone client, read about it here:

and according to the FAQ, importing outlook crap is pretty easy:

Office: OpenOffice.org is totally for free and it opens and saves Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents (compatible with Office XP).

Games: this is an issue for some people. Too bad we only have games like Unreal Tournament 2004, Medal of Honor, The Sims, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake III Arena, who run native
