WineX for free?
« on: 15 March 2004, 22:41 »
I've been searching for awhile and I cannot find a free RPM for WineX (Mandrake). Anyone have any ideals where I can find one?

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241&package_id=80066

found that in about 3 seconds, using Yahoo!.  Typed in "wine linux", got the Wine headquarters on the first link, clicked download on the left side navigation, and clicked Mandrake on the resulting list.  Been searching for awhile, eh?

WineX isn't OSS(...they claim they will be in the future...).
Their are no binaries for it.
You'll have to use CVS.
Just follow this link(...it's easy   ;)   ):

WineX is open source. They just don't make binaries. Wine is GPLed, so WineX cannot be anything more than GPLed anyway. If it were not open source, they couldn't have a CVS repository very welll could they?   . But parts of it are closed source I believe, namely the CD-ROM protectedion stuff that ensures a CD-ROM wasnt copied etc.

All their "easy-to-use" stuff(like the updater, auto-installer,...) is kept closed source.
Transgaming prommised to give all code and not only the CVS version.
I would never pay a single Euro for such a company...

PS: WineX is not GPL, they're even against it.

I would and I did pay for it, it works twice as well as the shitty free Wine, and supports 10 times more games. Worthy of my $30 indeed.

I found it free... No problems so far... I found an RPM so there was no need for any frustrating work... and games are installing no problem... (I only found WineX3, because I looked up the games I was wanting to run and they were all supported at 2.0)

I know.
Still ..., they did promise to put all their code in Wine.
I'm still waiting.

Thanks.

Their packages only include a very small CVS installation script.
It takes less time to do this manually.
(Void's link is really easy...)
