Well, two things: First, you can't compare mhz ratings between two unrelated chip families. Now even AMD is using this defense because their Athlons are at lower clock speeds than P4s. But we all know which chip is faster. (Hint: Starts with "A" and ends with "n".)
Same principle applies to PowerPC G3/G4, etc. Just because the fastest G4 on the market now is 867 mhz, it does NOT mean it's half the speed of the fastest P4. In audio/video applications, in fact, it's right there with the fastest P4s, and in some areas, considerably faster.
Second thing: If
The Register and various rumor sites are correct, the G5 comes out in a month or two. They've tested it at speeds up to 2.4 Ghz, but the guess is that it'll be introduced at 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 Ghz. It's going to be a 64-bit chip, and the G5 boxen are going to have 400 mhz buses, use RDRAM, next-generation FireWire (twice the speed of the current one), and USB2. These things, ladies and gentlemen, are going to RIP SHIT.
After all, it wasn't for shits and giggles that Alias|Wavefront ported Maya to OS X. Apple obviously must've had some discussions with them about their future plans and convinced them it would be VERY much worth their while . . .
These next few months promise to be quite interesting.
