Yes of course PP makes you dumb. The golden rule is: no more than 4 slides for a one hour lecture. People just tend to look at slides and forget to listen to you. Now, about powerpoint you should read Edward Tufte's little book about it, it's a beauty. It's at:

Yea your right about the slides as a distraction, my school use them and you cant pay attention because the teachers are so pro as to use 4345325345 animations per slide.
