the problem that i had with billy was that he acted like osx was infinitely better than linux and he acted like every linux was hard to use when that is most definitely not the case. redhat is a walk in the park, I know plenty of ppl who have installed it with no configuration whatsoever (cept for like options and stuff) and never touched a command line. all hardware detected at installation and everything.
specifically to billy:
Linux is far from perfect, but you gotta realize that half of the stuff you said about linux only applied to a some distros. thats why nix users always tell ppl not to just call it linux, because its way to broad. and when you say it should all be one i wholeheartedly disagree. Linux is just a common denominator. there IS no central distribution other than the very base GNU tools. for instance my distro will not be marketed as Linux at all because i dont want ppl to think all linuces work like mine does.
i didnt mean to start a fight but if you have criticism for linux try to ease it in cuz i have a problem with stubbornness hehe. especially since half of your criticism is false
im done bitching about different platforms and its users, with the exception of windows of course. from now on ill take the good take on different platforms: use whatever u want unless its windows.
zombie: i dont care what your stereotype of linux users are (sure there are a lot of linux ppl like what you describe) but linux doesnt really require much work anymore. companies like redhat have overcome a lot of linux's desktop limitations. and i only know 3 or 4 "nerdy" (as you would call it) programmers, the rest of them do the same stuff i do, football, paintball, weight lifting etc. i usually all in all spend about 2-3 hours on my computer because im working to release a linux distro. on the weekends, depending on my mood i might stay inside (usually nowadays cuz winter SUCKS) and be a lazy ass and watch tv or work on calix etc. me and my friends do the same things all other freshman (note to billy
) do, movies, chicks, etc. speaking of which i goota see daredevil that movies should be cool. but anyway, i agree with you that windows right now has a more dumb-person interface and hardware detection and shit but linux is well on its way. the only time i have to use a terminal is when i test some new code on calix and reboot and it fucks up. however i usually use the console because i dont have to go to calix->internet->konqueror i can just type konqueror
. plus bash is fun (if you like that stuff). in short, im making peace. you are partially right about windows being good for normal users and linux has a bit to go, but you should setup an old pc and stick rh8 on it, youd be surprised.
phew, outta breath.
