And how exactly did Mr. Gates calculate that figure.  Did he have one on those "trustworthy" accountants from corperate America do it for him?

Does it seem funny to you that gates spends 100 million to fix these security issues? I find it funny because he's already paying lots of money to have programmers who are SUSPOSED to do this as it is. I say it's more like Gates is spending 100 million to tell us "We're working on it!".

Either

A:MS programmers are horrendously incompetent.
B:There's a giant heap of fixes behind closed doors that are released very slowly ON PURPOSE.
C:MS INSISTS the programmers not work to their full potential.

B and C both point to conspiracy. This means that Windows sucking @$$ is ESSENTIAL to MS profits. Why is beyond me, but the answer may lie in that KMFMS article that rocked the house so much.

It would seem to me that if MS felt they'd make more money with better software, they would MAKE SURE their programming team is competent.

Windows' sucking ass is how they sell service packs. And they probably don't tell them to not work to their full potential, they just give them tasks such as redesigning the start menu for the millionth time.

Think about it. If they were to write the "perfect" OS then they would go out of business due to never needing another upgrade to the next version of Windows or Office.  So Microsoft intentionally writes shoddy software.  It makes good business sense when you are interested in making money and not in producing quality products.

makes sense.  Besides, you can have a perfect os and still need to upgrade.  consider the perfect of of 15 years ago.  how much of today's hardware would work with it?  New "perfect" os's / upgrades should be driven by the need to support new hardware, not to fix a bug that should not have been in there in the first place.  in a perfect world of course.

Probably useless programmers.

I heard somewhere that it costs them 11 billion a year to maintain Internet Explorer.

Now, that REALLY sux.  More like Incompetent Exploiter.

But then again, don't think I'm biased, I'm using a Windows XP machine to type up this -

Specifications are for the weak and timid!
You question the worthiness of my code? I should kill you where you stand!
Indentation?! - I will show you how to indent when I indent your skull!
What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes' leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake.
Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' - they have 'arguments' - and they ALWAYS WIN THEM.
Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak.
A TRUE Klingon Warrior does not comment on his code!
Klingon software does NOT have BUGS. It has FEATURES, and those features are too sophisticated for a Romulan pig like you to understand.

d) all of the above

100 mil seems a bit on the low side, and i thought it lined up more along the lines of the cost of controlling that awful stink

HERE'S Microsoft (on a bun, mustard and mayo, lettuce, pickles...):

i sell sandwiches.

the guy across the street does too.

i make really good sandwich "kits," selling all the fixins for you to assemble for yourself.

the guy across the street sells assembled sandwiches.

i use good salami from the meat market down the street, locally grown onions, imported mozzerella, and i make my own mustard

the guy across the street has a deal with wal-mart and all of his ingredients are delivered

my sandwich kits are 25 cents

his sandwiches are 50 dollars

i work alone here in my little shop, and i know that i owe the people who sold me the food for the quality of my ingredients

he has a huge sandwich making machine, 200 employees, and a big-rig to spread the sandwiches across the state

you are free to take your sandwich with you from my shop

he insists on watching you eat it, right there in the store.  if you refuse, one of his big neckless cronies will follow you and make sure only YOU eat it, and he will kill any birds that try to eat the crumbs.

sometimes i mess up the sandwich kits, and i will gladly give you some onions if that's what i forgot.  so will the lady i buy the onions from.

he is constantly forgetting stuff, sometimes skimping on purpose.  he will gladly give you a serving of onions, sign here, they will arrive in 4-6 weeks.  that'll be 10 bucks...

there are lots of friendly people that will make your sandwich kit into a sub for you, if you ask them

he will help you eat your sandwich for 10 bucks...

MY FOOD TASTES GOOD

his doesn't

ehhhhh its crap but at least i wrote it buuuuuuuuu
