Jay Leno made that joke, I don't believe he works for AOL.

AOL does suck, I don't really feel like explaining my opinion right now, but i believe they are one of our worst companies.

I don't see how it gives our whole country a bad rep though. You know how pissed people would get if I were to say something like, "that black guy was just arrested for murder, he gives africans a bad rep"? it's ignorant. As is giving 1 man and a company the power to make us all look like idiots. I'm sure there are plenty of examples but most things of importance are led by idiots. I know of 2 people that actually are what you'd expect us americans to be.

Hrm. I always thought it was because in order to get different Arab countries to sign-up, the US promised they would not "invade" Iraq, so the Middle East wouldn't be THAT destablized.

Keep in mind, I didn't take world history yet, and am just talking about things I read or heared, so feel free to correct me, and I'll feel free to search Google and come up with some more stuff (maybe  ;) ).

This is much different than an isolated murder. This is the case of a mega corporation in control of a big part of the American media. Chances are that people outside the US who will listen to American TV will come across an AOL-owned channel, and might get a very bad opinion of Americans, or at least think they are really ignorant. A good example of this was when CNN mistook Czech Republic for Switzerland on a map:

quote:
Jay Leno made that joke, I don't believe he works for AOL.

Most of these jokes are by Leno, and some of them even repeat themselves. Displaying them along with other jokes like 'laughable lawsuits' or 'dumb laws' as if they're casual jokes to laugh at is just as bad in my opinion. I don't even find the funny; they're downright insulting.

I've written about this very thing before. This behavior is utterly childish and contemptable. OK, so Chirac didn't pause long enough to ask: "How high?" when His Bushness told him to jump. Is the rest of the world not entitled to an opinion? How fast all too many folks here in America are to forget. The lady in Paris who, upon hearing about the WTC, said that today we (the French) are all Americans this day? Contrast the reaction of the French with those in other parts of the world. Or that this very same Jacques Chirac that we're all suppose to hate so much was the first foreign leader to visit Ground Zero to pay his respects? Or the fact that not more than a month ago that it was French troops who saved hundreds of Americans when the war in Liberia suddenly exploded into Monrovia? And AOHell is still putting up all those stupid French jokes (which are neither original nor funny)?(!)

Well, let me tell you that as an American I still call those potato strips "French fries", I damn well intend to go on using Mandrake (like I'm going to ditch that and go back to Winderz because MandrakeSoft is a French company       ) When will these assholes realize that they are hurting their fellow Americans who happen to own and work at "French" restuarants? Or the Americans who run businesses that import French goods?

Isn't it high time that people get over it? After all, His Bushness proclaimed the war over on May 1.

When will this country grow the fuck up?

I thought they were funny.
Its not like the French aren't doing similar things back?  I'm sure they have shitloads of websites that quote bush and his mess ups.   I don't see what the big deal is.

Yes, but they normally appear at personal websites and forums, not mainstream news sites. Even mainstram humour sites don't put such puerile jokes. Those are not average segregation jokes like redneck or blonde or ethnic jokes. The type of humour found at Netscape.com makes those French jokes stick out like a sore thumb, and they look more like subtle, deliberate attacks than jokes.

I think it's in bad taste and just plain stupid.
I don't hate AOL or think they are a bad company, and I don't particularly like them either, I basically don't care.
I imagine that the joke writers are catering to what they believe to be public opinion, I guess being politically correct doesn't apply here.
I remember when I was a kid there were a lot of Polish jokes going around, just because they lost the Olympics or something. But at least some of those jokes were actually funny.

Exactly. This reminds me that I need to watch my wording sometimes. I know it gets on my nerves when people say things like "The Americans think this" or "The Americans did that" or "Once again, the Americans invaded such-and-such a place." (As opposed to "such-and-such a corporation thinks this," or "such-and-such an organization did that" or "Once again, the United States military invaded such-and-such a place") It might seem like an insignificant difference, but it really isn't; I might live in the U.S., but I am not AOL, Microsoft or the USAF. I don't make their decisions, and things shouldn't be said as though I or the majority of the people in this country do. Sorry for the rambling, just felt like I had to say that

(Another thing this reminds me of is "America Town" from the Simpsons episode where they go to Japan. If anybody here has seen that, I'm sure they will know EXACTLY why I am mentioning that   :D  )

You're an utter moron. Since you appear to have a dismal knowledge of geography, I'll give you an assignment to make up for all the time you wasted in grade school playing your national anthem with your Walkman during lectures. Firstly, look on a map and point out where Canada is located. I'll give you a hint: it is the big lump of land north of your own. Secondly, I ask you the name of the continent where Canada is located. Thirdly, write a essay on why everything you said above makes no sense whatsoever.

No, I am not a 'sepratist'. You, however, are a right prat, period. As for separatism, I have not made my mind on that yet. But I don't see where this issue comes in, as the topic at hand concerns a corporation who insults a country which is not mine and undermines the integrity of yours with its hogwash. If you love your country so much, how can you tolerate it being manipulated by a corporation and a government that clearly go against its very principles -- namely freedom of expression?

Bwa-a-a-aha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!  Big American corporations mercilously crushing the upstarts!

Actually, I met a few French people before and thought they were nice people.  I've seen other Europeans on the subway including some speaking German and found them to be as human as the Americans on the same subway train.  I recently talked to two officers who were in the German Navy who I found talking to each other one day.  That reminds me.  I was thinking of bringing over a set of gears that my father brought back from the war (WWII) and see if anyone in the German Navy can tell me what they are.  There's offices in Crystal City (Arlington) Virginia with people from the German Navy working in them.  I wonder what they are up to.  Walking through the mall during breaks from work I found that all the asian shops are run by Koreans.  My boss came from Russia, we have other Russians working for us, two Chinese and two Koreans.  There is also some one from Japan and people from Afganistan, Pakistan and the Philipeans working in my office.  Everywhere I look in my area I find people from a foreign country, recent immigrants, people with green cards, etc.  I see people from El Salvador and other South and Central American countries.  Years ago I used to talk to my friends about our ancesters coming from countries like Germany, Italy, England, etc.  America is really made up of people from all over the world.
