wow... that was a lot cooler than I thought it would be.

I thought it would be something like photoshop's "poster edges" filter applied to every frame of a video.

though that would also kick major arse.

Yeah, it looks cool.  Check this out though.  It looks like a large portion of the work came from a few Asian Ph.D. students.

I believe they should get more credit for this than Microsoft.  It's kind of like crediting a university with a great scientific discovery, just because one of its professors/graduate students attended it.

Prepare for cheap knock-off's of Ah-Ha's "Take on Me" video made by 15 year olds, along with unnecessary use of it in videos by friends/family that are so-not-interesting.  Here's another effect to add to the tacky home movie maker's tool belt..  Sometimes less is more.

Then again, I'm not sure this can be simplified enough to be a standard effect in introductory video editing apps like iMovie or (shudder) Microsoft's Movie Maker.

I'm pretty sure you can do that with After Effects.

BTW: one of my favorite cartoons, Aqua Teen Hunger Force is done entirely with Photoshop, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro.  They talk about it a bit on the DVD commentaries.

personally, I think consumer level video apps should be restricted to dissolves and wipes.

Seeing as anything else just gets HORRIBLY abused and look silly anyway..

I only ever use dissolve and wipes anyway, with the occasional irising.

This can also be extended to those who abuse PowerPoint to no end.  Not every presentation needs PowerPoint.  Learn to speak in front of people.  No one cares about your lame animated bullets and lame clipart.  Thanks.

It sucks when corporate marketing techniques become integrated with education.  If I had a professor in college who used PowerPoint slides I'd usually just request a copy on disk.  Why should I have to wake up to listen to you read off of slides for an hour?

My science teacher did powerpoint one year. Luckily, it was just to supplement the material in the book. I just sat there, skimmed through the chapter, and fell asleep.

anyone who uses those annoying moving bullets or cliparts or those brainfucking sounds in their presentation are idiots and should be brainfucked and assfucked and then shot in the groin.  FUCK i hate the fucks who does that.  when will they learn that the sound of a car zooming by as their 200 line paragraph appeared on the slide for them to read out loud does not make them seem any smater, but quite the opposit.
sorry i had to say that.  a presentation such as that is still fresh in my mind.

What I HATE even more is when people call them 'PowerPoint presentations'. It's a fucking SLIDESHOW, damnit!

One of the funniest PowerPoint presentations I ever saw was in a Poetry course.  I don't know how many of you are familar with Sylvia Plath, but she was a poet who killed herself by sticking her head in a gas oven.

Anyway, this guy in class had to do a presentation about her, and for the slide on her death he had a huge picture of an oven.

I don't know if anyone else finds that amusing.

I hate to be an Apple whore all the time, but the few experiences I've had with Keynote have been pretty positive.  Some of the default templates are a bit more elegant, and so are the transitions.  The cool thing about it is that you can export the slide shows to Quicktime, then import them into Final Cut Express/Pro or iMovie, then do voiceovers.  It's a possible option whenever an editor's built-in text generators aren't quite good enough, and you can't afford to splurge on anything else.

The Army is gay for PP...
Quarterly training briefs, new policies, old stats, planned field exercises, after action reviews, classes...you name it, everything you do in the army is on power point somewhere.

It's gay.
