My mom has experienced the very darkest downside of windows: she "lost" her mouse and when she regained it the whole management software was shot to hell.

My mom likes to play solitaire on her computer as a kind of therapy for her muscle aches. The other day I was at her computer because she had told me to start it while she was in the kitchen. She wanted the computer to be ready for her when she came back. Well, while waiting for her to get ready I started a program and the whole system crashed on me. Nothing was working and I hit the reset button. When it was done with scan disk (of course the damn thing accused me of shutting down the computer wrong!) the mouse was gone. There was a little window telling me that no mouse could be detected and all I could do was hit enter and restart it.

After that start the mouse was back but now the management was instead shot to hell. A simple easy click now can be a double click. Why is it that windows has this badly written software? A hardware device should not be lost only because the system crashes. I have seen every kind of system crash just about anywhere but only windows can lose a device AFTER the crash.

Sounds like windows 9x. Upgrade to the NT series already and your troubles will go away.

Also, you should've just reconfigured the mouse speeds (like doubleclick tolerance) and all would've been fine again. If something happens with the filesystem or registry in w9x, you can have pretty much any kind of things happen.

That's no excuse for Microsoft torturing home users with Windows 9x for more than 5 years!

Also, Windows XP has its share of problems too, don't think it's the best operating system out there.

why not upgrade to linux? there are something like half a dozen solitaire clones for it, and since the mouse configuration is in plain english (more or less) in the XF86Config there's less of a risk of this happening, or at least more of a chance of fixing it.

I prefer windows 2000 and Windows 2003. I have to admit the latter is a warez copy, though. I figured I'd just try it out to see what it's like but I fell in love with it and don't want to replace it with legit system now :)

There are ways to get cheap legit versions of software. Windows 2003 just happens to be a server version, even the OEM version is more expensive than XP :)

Also, where exactly do you have to pay $470 for XP pro? Checking the prices, that's about $100 more expensive than the local store. Also, if you upgrade from windows 98, you can get update version for even cheaper. And OEM prices are even cheaper than that. Since OEM versions are sold to anyone who buys internal component, some stores here sell OEM software to people who buy IDE cables ;)

oh wowee the price dropped by $4 . do i really care? no, because i stay away from microsoft related products.
yeah, but you still bought win98 in the first place so it makes up for the difference in the money you are going to waste.

I congratulate you for managing to find a ridiculously expensive store.

beware of 'bargain basement prices' on Microsoft operating systems. many turn out to be pirated rip offs of the originals.
ps- those funds where in Canadian dollars.

Pirated rip offs? If you have a proof of purchase, microsoft will replace your pirate copy with a legit one.

Let's run them broke!!!

Make a fake proof of purchase, burn 10 copies of your windows disks, get the legit versions from Microsoft and sell them... Instant Profit...
I'm often asked why I hate Microsoft - "What did they ever do to you?". Well, I'll tell you. They made dodgy programs and standards which have wasted hundreds of hours of my time involving lost work in crashes and stupidity.

Sadly, Microsft's pockets are almost as deep as the security holes in Windows. It'd never work.

i got a better idea, all of us burn like 50,000 cd's and at the samne time reverse enjineer windows at hold a ransom for the source code!!

EDIT: ransom might not work as few people would want code to a crappy bloated os that has 40gb of source code
