Why after...
« on: 19 April 2005, 02:37 »
Why after clearing the history, cookies, temp files, and all do websites stay in the search bar?  For example when you I type www.w , a website pops up?  Why does it do that and how do you clear it without reformating your computer?  Yes... I am a noob. :fu: :fu:

Umm.... this is a browser problem, not an OS problem. Given those are one and the same in every Microsoft OS ever seen, we can rule out his using Linux.

Solution: Use Firefox. It'll actually get rid of stuff when you want it to, and if you see the need to get rid of stuff yourself, it doesn't use registry hacks to hide its logs and cache and stuff from you.

Sounds like spyware.  Given the parameters of this situation, I suggest that you get the MS antispy beta and run that on it and have it clean it up.

No, and I'm going to call you on this one.  Sounds like URL completion, which means the MRU needs to be manually expunged for that to be disabled (I have yet to find a way to keep IE from doing this crap, you think I have Firefox on the XP box for shits & giggles?)  I'm not one to advocate screwing with the registry unless you know what you're doing, try regedit.com for details (and a huge disclaimer) on this one.

Try Spybot and remember to use the immunize option ;)

Because switching to Linux is easier said than done, while switching from IE to FireFox is easy peasy. If we'd suggested Linux and he had a bad experiance with it (as I had) he could be put off opensource for software for good and go back to Windows and use Microsoft Internet Explorer.

However,

Tastycakes, try Linux, I would recomend Knoppix as you  can try out Linux without installing a completely new operating system.

Come on guys. This is such a simple issue. I can't believe none of you can answer the posters question...

To clear the auto-complete, just do this from IE:

Tools > Internet Options > Content > Auto Complete > Clear Forms > Clear Passwords

You can also check the boxes to keep IE from doing auto complete in the future.

toadlife,
This is an anti-Microsoft forum and it's againts the forum rules to help people with Microsoft products because it doesn't help our cause.

Tastycakes,

It sounds like you've been infected with some malware that you've picked up from some dodgey porn site.

Have you or has anyone else looked at porn sites on your computer?

It's ok you can be honest with us, most of us here are blokes and we all like a bit of porn now and again. :D

In fact I know of a porn site that recommends Mozilla FireFox altough this is a bit old so they called it by its old name FireBird.

Here's the Link (don't worry this doesn't take you to any porn just their browsing advice page)

New Mozilla Browser
I checked out the new Mozilla browser, firebird. It has an automatic popup stopper that works like a charm. Fast program, free download. If you want to surf safely over the web without having to worry about popups, you definately want to try FireBird
