illhostit.com

So, after some work (and a lot of money), http://illhostit.com now has its own hardware and is in a high quality datacenter.

So, now we're offering webhosting along with the usual free file hosting. You can check out the packages at http://illhostit.com/packages.php if you like.

The coupon code "90off" gives you 90% off your first month, and the coupon code "100family" gives you the family plan for free, forever (there's only 20 of those).

The coupon code "microsuck" gives you 15% off forever.

Now I have to hurry up and start making contributable posts before all the people that don't remember me consider me a spammer :/

Opterons were considered, but in my experience Xeons do better for hosting. Now if I were to specialize in game servers, or other specialized tasks, I'd choose Opteron.

Just added that, shows some info.

The design of I'll Host It still looks like not much work has put into it.

A serious look at your lay-out can really help!

but- what type of speed can I download off of it? Can it max out my connection? Is there a file I can download off of it and test?

Simplicity is the goal. I don't want to put 100s of 2x2 pixel graphics on there and slow everything down. People can still easily get to the file hosting service, like always... I want that to be really easy. And all of our other services are easily accessible, with low page transition times. I wasn't going for complicated.

Your download speed really is affected by more than just the server and its network, it is also affected by your latency, the route your isp gives you to the server, and more.

Now, honestly to get the best performance a download accelerator always does the trick. It downloads from the server multiple times, using the bandwidth as effeciently as possible.

But, now that I've said that, http://illhostit.com/hdr.sh
I have a 6mbps in my home, and I typically download a file at 350kb/s without an accelerator. However, I can download 2 files at 350kb/s each. So I use an accelerator and get about 760kb/s.

I got 720KB/s without accelerator, and a wopping 973.5KB/s with Internet Download Manager (bar none the best download accel program)

nice server! ps- where is this geographically located? what are typically the least busyest times this server has so that I can test my speed with?

talk about wow you have the best server ever way to go!

The server is located with Peer1 in Seattle's Westin building, which is pretty much where the pacific northwest gets their internet from. Peer1 has multiple peering arrangements with ISPs and other internet companies to help insure they have the lowest latency possible, and that everyone gets the best route possible.

I suppose our busiest times are evening hours, but we have plenty of bandwidth so even when we are busiest there shouldn't be any slow down for you. You -might- get knocked down to the 300kb/s range if there's some large file thats extremely popular, but this hasn't happened yet.

I suppose the least busiest times would be between 1 and 2 am pacific time.
