stryker, i have availed myself of a family plan, but now i have a regret. i put in a domain name that it looks like i cannot really sort out, being that it's a dyndns one. if i register a "real" domain name, can i in some way change my domain name details with illhostit to use the new dmain name? i suppose i would point the domain name at the illhostit servers, but i would need to update the illhostit records as well, yes?
i know not much about this
should i have submitted this as a support ticket? i now feel a bit dim...

I recommend contacting me either through live support or a support ticket to sort this out, I don't want to be posting your account details on a public forums.

If you are using a dynamic dns, you can simply point your hostname to 64.34.38.30.

calumcarlyle.kicks-ass.net is pointing to 64.34.37.163 and should be pointing to 64.34.38.30.

64.34.37.163 and 64.34.37.164 are for your nameservers, if you have a real domain. The service isn't really meant for a subdomain through another company, but it'll work still. Just point it to 64.34.38.30.

I noticed that, I saw you trying to connect. What browser do you use? I've only tested it with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari

Opera 8 . i can also report the error page to opera support people, incase it uses some proprietary interface. You should use a cgi thing instead, because those even work with ancient NetPositive on BeOS.

All it uses is php. It should support any web browser. I have no idea why it wouldn't work with opera. But, live support isn't the only available option, and I like this software so I don't plan to switch. Thanks for letting me know though, I'll look into it.

Opterons were considered, but in my experience Xeons do better for hosting. Now if I were to specialize in game servers, or other specialized tasks, I'd choose Opteron.

Just added that, shows some info.

All of the Opteron vs Xeon benchmarks I've seen have shown the Opteron wiping the floor agianst the Xeon in Apache/mysql benchmarks.

Remember, benchmarks are only accurate if they support your preconceived notions.

Let me put it this way. I've never seen a benchmark that showed the Xeon beating the Opteron in databse or web serving...

    http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030422/opteron-17.html#database_test

http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2004/07/msg00286.html

http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=1982&p=6

http://www.anandtech.com/linux/showdoc.aspx?i=2163&p=2

I happen to have access to a dual Xeon and Dual Opteron box at work. They both run Win2k3, so I should run webbench and benchmark IIS6/MSSQL on them for kicks.

Don't get me wrong here though. It's not like using Xeon server will put you out of business. The difference in performance might not be that signifigant in the real world.
