September 2004.It was just not possible to get online, at the time. some bum with red shoes, do you have the personal edition? Is gcc in the repositories?
The free version has GCC, so there's no reason you shouldn't have been able to get it.
i thought suse 10.0 was pretty good. It was the only distro i could get that would support my graphics right from install and has a very good 64bit version.
